Arezzo and Cortona

Arezzo is the birthplace of the man who invented the musical scale: Guido d'Arezzo. It has the biggest antiques market in Italy and is a very wealthy city, due to its successful jewellery industry. Arezzo's most important monument is the church of San Francesco, home to Piero della Francesca's greatest fresco cycle, the Legend of the True Cross. A small but exquisite Piero della Francesca fresco of Mary Magdalene is in the huge 13th-16th century cathedral, the Duomo. Worth a visit are also the remains of a Roman amphitheater.
A little anecdote: the film Life is Beautiful, directed by Roberto Benigni, which won 3 Oscars, was partly filmed in Arezzo and the surrounding countryside. Not surprisingly, perhaps, since Benigni was born in this area.
In the province of Arezzo is Cortona, the town near which the American author Frances Mayes renovated a farmhouse. She recounts her experience of buying and restoring the 200-year-old house in her best-selling book Under the Tuscan Sun: at Home in Italy (see right column).
Web page: Under the Tuscan Sun: at Home in Italy.

The book is full of joy for the beauty of the Tuscan landscape, the unexpected treasures found during the restoration of the house, the buried frescos, the derelict vineyards brought back to new life. Frances Mayes has even written a follow-up, Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy (see the right column).
Web page: Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy.

Another famous foreign resident is the Scottish writer Muriel Spark, living in a restored 14th-century church and former presbytery in the Val di Chiana, the countryside near Arezzo, Cortona and Lake Trasimeno (this last in Umbria).

To many English-speaking people, Italy invariably evokes Tuscany. It's not just Tony Blair, the British prime minister, who holidays in Tuscany. The British upper-middle classes are attracted to the beauty of this region, which they have christened Chiantishire, and they buy villas on its hills or rent farmhouses with a view.
The title Chianti News could be mistaken for a wine industry bulletin: in fact it's the newspaper for the English community of the area.
The British estate agents Chianti Estates, who rent properties in the region, say that Tuscany is much more accessible than it used to be, although still pretty expensive. Some areas are less crowded and therefore more affordable than others.
Chianty is probably still one of the most popular destinations. Chianti countryside is very much like a Chianti wine bottle label: hilltops with vineyards - valleys with poplars - fields of sunflowers - walled hill towns in the distance.
Most people associate Tuscany with the marvellous world of the Tuscan hills, cultivated with olive groves and vineyards, and dotted with cypress trees. Yet Tuscany has an extraordinarily varied countryside: the Tuscan Archipelago, the Tuscan hills, the Etruscan hills of Maremma Toscana, the Tuscan Appennines.

Tuscany has some of the most beautiful cities and countryside in Italy and indeed in the world. Italy is divided into 20 regions; Tuscany is a region in North-West Italy. Summer is the best time to visit the Tuscan cities and countryside, when Italians head for the seaside en masse, if you want to enjoy traffic-free roads and find car parks empty.
Tuscany was the driving force of the Italian Renaissance, a time when Tuscan cities were rivals, until Florence eventually won.
Most of the area now known as Tuscany was in ancient times the region inhabited by the Etruscans, Etruria, and was at the heart of the Etruscan civilization, a pre-Roman civilization. Towns like Volterra and Arezzo, South of Pisa, still contain Etruscan remains. Later it was called Tuscia, and now it's Tuscany, or Toscana in Italian.
The climate in Tuscany is temperate. Tuscany is the most wooded Italian region, with poplars, cypress trees and pinewoods. The Maremma, on the South Tuscan coast, is also worthy of note. The capital of Tuscany is Florence, or Firenze, one of the great Tuscan cities of art.
