Arezzo and Cortona
Arezzo is the birthplace of the man who invented the musical scale: Guido d'Arezzo. It has the biggest antiques market in Italy and is a very wealthy city, due to its successful jewellery industry. Arezzo's most important monument is the church of San Francesco, home to Piero della Francesca's greatest fresco cycle, the Legend of the True Cross. A small but exquisite Piero della Francesca fresco of Mary Magdalene is in the huge 13th-16th century cathedral, the Duomo. Worth a visit are also the remains of a Roman amphitheater.
A little anecdote: the film Life is Beautiful, directed by Roberto Benigni, which won 3 Oscars, was partly filmed in Arezzo and the surrounding countryside. Not surprisingly, perhaps, since Benigni was born in this area.
In the province of Arezzo is Cortona, the town near which the American author Frances Mayes renovated a farmhouse. She recounts her experience of buying and restoring the 200-year-old house in her best-selling book Under the Tuscan Sun: at Home in Italy (see right column).
Web page:
Under
the Tuscan Sun: at Home in Italy.
The book is full of joy for the beauty of the Tuscan landscape, the unexpected
treasures found during the restoration of the house, the buried frescos, the derelict vineyards brought back to new life. Frances Mayes has even written a follow-up, Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy (see the right column).
Web page:
Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy.
Another famous foreign resident is the Scottish writer Muriel Spark, living in a restored 14th-century church and former presbytery in the Val di Chiana, the countryside near Arezzo, Cortona and Lake Trasimeno (this last in Umbria).
