Florence Cheap Hotels with History, Atmosphere, Character

On this page go to:

Cheap hotels in Florence are considerably better than budget hotels you can find in, for example, London. Often visitors from abroad are surprised at the standard they didn't expect for such low prices.

I've stayed in many hotels in both Britain and Italy, and definitely the latter ones are better value. The only thing you may miss is a kettle, which is only partially in use in the country of Giotto and Matteo Renzi (the current Italian Prime Minister and former mayor of Florence), unlike in the nation of Dickens and David Cameron.

You may also be surprised at the great concentration of so many buildings of astonishing architectural and historic value, the amount of beauty and assembly of incredible art treasures in a relatively small space, and at how you can walk practically everywhere in Florence historic centre to see and experience all you want.

Note: The hotels described here have been hand-picked because they are the most liked by guests as indicated by guest reviews and number of bookings. If you'd like to see all available hotels in the city or area, click on "View all hotels in..." your chosen area, city or town.

These are the hotel prices when booked online, which are generally lower. There is no reservation fee.

After you book you'll receive an immediate confirmation e-mail from the hotel.

Hotel Enza in Florence Italy
Hotel Enza is an excellent-value, inexpensive hotel in the historic centre of Florence, 300 yards (5 blocks, 10 minutes' walk) from the central railway station Santa Maria Novella.
Located in an old friary, it is a little, family-run, very cute hotel, with cleanliness above average.
The funny thing is that this hotel has my name (which happens to be Enza Ferreri), but I haven't selected it for that reason, obviously.
The hotel is perfectly located a short (10-15 minutes') walk from all main attractions, museums and sights, including Florence Cathedral (the Duomo), Uffizi Gallery, the Gallery of the Academy of Florence (Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze, home to the original of Michelangelo's David), the Arno river, the Fortezza da Basso, and yet it is suprisingly quiet at the same time, in peaceful surroundings with little traffic noise to disturb your sleep.
Hotel Enza is also an easy walk from the Central Market in San Lorenzo Square, where you can buy fresh produce.
The San Lorenzo Market comprises two markets: an indoor market, Mercato Centrale, selling all sorts of food, and an outdoor market lining the streets surrounding the large building of the Central Market, selling clothing, souvenirs and much else.
The neighbourhood has plenty of restaurants, cafés and markets.
The hotel's standard of decor and furnishings and the helpfulness of English-speaking staff in making reservations, recommending places of interest, shops and restaurants is higher than the price suggests.
The hotel has room service, bar, shuttle service, and more facilities. The front desk is staffed 24 hours.
Rooms are good sized, and have free WiFi, air conditioning, flat-screen TV, private bathroom with free toiletries and hairdryer, and other amenities.

General price range per room, with or without breakfast included
Single, double, twin & triple rooms: 30 - 150 euros

Hotel Montreal in Florence Italy
Hotel Montreal is a remarkably good value hotel for budget travellers in the historic centre, 2 blocks (3-minutes' walk) from the main train station Santa Maria Novella, 10-15 minutes' walk to all major sights, romantic and tourist spots, museums, shops and markets, including Florence Cathedral, the Arno river, Old Bridge, the Uffizi Gallery and, just around the corner from the hotel, the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria Novella with its cloister, one of Florence's most important churches, containing a trove of art treasures and frescoes by Gothic and early Renaissance masters, and even historic scientific instruments. An original Gothic building, it was later enriched by the great architect Leon Battista Alberti.
Montreal is a pleasant hotel with a friendly atmosphere, and very easy to find from the railway station.
Via della Scala, the hotel's street, has an Irish pub, the Joshua Tree, and lots of reasonably priced restaurants with terrace are nearby. There's also a very good pasticceria where if you like, although Hotel Montreal serves breakfast, you can do as Italians do and have it there, picking what you fancy from a wide selection of sweet and savoury goodies.
Hotel Montreal's staff speak English and are helpful about attractions, local information, and organising trips in Florence and the surrounding area, which saves you much time and effort.
The hotel has a bar serving fresh Italian coffee, and many other facilities. Reception is open 24 hours a day.
All rooms have free WiFi, air conditioning, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, private bathroom with hairdryer, safety deposit box, and other amenities.

Hotel Medici in Florence Italy
Hotel Medici is an extremely good value hotel right in the middle of Florence historic centre, between Piazza Duomo and Piazza della Signoria, the two squares which form the very heart of the city (religious the former, political the latter).
The hotel's location could hardly be any better, 2 minutes' walk from the Cathedral Square home to the Cathedral (also known as Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore, Saint Mary of the Flower) with Brunelleschi's Dome, Giotto's Belltower and the Baptistry in one direction, and 5 minutes' walk from Piazza della Signoria home to Palazzo Vecchio and Loggia dei Lanzi, and the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio and the river Arno beyond them in the other direction.
Medici Hotel is a stone's throw from the Cathedral, or Duomo, and 10 minutes' walk from the main train station Santa Maria Novella. The location is perfect and close to just about everywhere you want to go in Florence, while just around the corner, both ways there are typical Florence restaurants, shops and markets.
The three strong points of this hotel are price, location and views.
It's a no-frills hotel, not a luxury one, but for such an excellent location, steps away from all the beauty of this wonderful city, the prices are very low.
The hotel's position makes you feel the city has been built around it, and makes visiting Florence easy.
Hotel Medici impressively overlooks Florence Cathedral and the Baptistry from the large, lovely roof-garden terrace at the top, with tables and chairs: a romantic, breathtaking, overwhelming view of the Duomo and the city, to contemplate whilst sipping a glass of Tuscan red wine at sunset, that cannot be matched. The massive dome seems to be right in front of you, and you can almost touch the Belltower and Baptistry. The atmosphere is stunning.
Free WiFi is available in public areas, and the hotel has a bar.
All rooms have en-suite bathroom with free toiletries and a hairdryer.
Private parking is possible at a location nearby.

General price range per room, including breakfast
Single, double, triple & quadruple rooms: 30 - 150 euros

Florence Old Bridge B&B in Florence Italy
Florence Old Bridge B&B takes its name from one of the most famous and beautiful bridges in the world, Ponte Vecchio, which is 100 yards (2 minutes' walk) from the hotel.
This area, one of the most lovely and charming of Florence historic centre, is teeming with ancient craftsman studios and shops, good restaurants and bars.
Often in Italy the English term Bed&Breakfast has assumed the meaning of the informal, homely character of this kind of establishment rather than the strict meaning of providing both bed and breakfast.
Florence Old Bridge is a small and quite elegant Bed&Breakfast (breakfast is provided extra, which is often the Italian way) just on the other side of the Arno river ("Oltrarno"), 5 minutes' walk from the Arno and the Uffizi Gallery, 6 minutes' walk from Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, 3-4 minutes' from Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens.
Staying at the Florence Old Bridge is quite an experience, as the place with its homelike atmosphere makes you feel you are actually living in Florence as a resident instead of a visitor.
Everything in Florence historic centre is a short walk from the B&B.
Rooms are individually decorated in a traditional Tuscan style. They overlook inner courts or tiny streets without traffic and are very quiet and peaceful, even though you are in the very heart of the city.
All rooms have free WiFi, air conditioning, flat-screen TV, refrigerator, desk, en-suite bathroom with hairdryer and free toiletries.
Private parking is possible at a location nearby.

General price range per room
Single, double, twin & triple rooms: 40 - 120 euros

Hotel Bavaria in Florence Italy
Hotel Bavaria is an awesome-value budget hotel in a truly prime location between the Uffizi Gallery and the Cathedral, or Duomo, 4-6 minutes' walk from both and from Piazza della Signoria, the Basilica of Santa Croce, the river Arno, Ponte Vecchio, Michelangelo's House-Museum (Casa Buonarroti, where the great artist and his descendants occasionally lived), Palazzo Medici Riccardi, and 2 minutes' walk from Bargello National Museum and Dante's House.
The hotel itself is in a beautiful historical palazzo from the 1500s, a genuine Renaissance building, giving its guests the opportunity to stay in a very special ambience indeed.
If you like modernity this may not be your cup of tea, but if you love the feeling that you have stepped back in a period of art and beauty, in an atmosphere of history out of the ordinary daily life, this is the place for you.
The Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo, the palace housing the Hotel Bavaria, was built in 1568, by order of Antonio Ramirez di Montalvo, the Spanish first valet of the court of the ruler of Tuscany Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, by the Medici family's architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati.
The magnificent graffiti frescoes that still ornament the palazzo's façade and cover its surface with drawings in monochrome were the project of another court artist, the great Giorgio Vasari. Unlike in other buildings, they have not undergone recent repainting.
The centre of the façade is dominated by the Medici coat of arms, the owner's expression of gratitude for the source of his good fortune.
Free WiFi is available in the hotel's public areas.
Bavaria Hotel's facilities include bar, 24-hour front desk, express check-in/check-out, tour desk, ticket service, luggage storage, fax/photocopying, and others.
The attentive, helpful staff speak English.
Bavaria is in a pleasant area. The hotel has a courtyard and grand common rooms with beautiful high ceilings and frescoes.
The guest rooms are something you don't see often, if ever. They are spacious, and sometimes huge, not just by European but also by North American standards.
They are attractively designed in classic style and comfortable simplicity, with antique furnishings, and maintain their original Florentine atmosphere.
Some rooms have walls still decorated with terrific frescoes, and offer views of Florence Cathedral.
When you book you can choose rooms with en-suite bathroom or with shared bathroom.
All rooms have desk, cooling fan, free toiletries, a hairdryer, ironing facilities, electric kettle (not usually provided in Italian hotels), and other amenities.

General price range per room, including breakfast
Single, double, triple & quadruple rooms: 20 - 120 euros
