Florence Beautiful, Historic but Affordable Hotels

On this page go to:

One of the good things from a practical point of view about Florence (Firenze in Italian), one of Italy's main cities, is that its historic centre is quite compact and not very large, so that it's easy to see all the main places of interest in the city entirely by walking.

Yet in this incredible area many of the world's greatest treasures of art, history, architecture and culture are condensed.

Florence is the "capoluogo" (main city) of Tuscany, a region in the north-west of Italy whch was for centuries a state in itself, of which Florence was the capital.

Florence is located in a basin surrounded by foothills at the base of the Apennines mountain range, and the hills can be seen from the city.

Florence is crossed by the river Arno. Most of the the city and of the historic centre lies on the right bank, but the historic centre extends to the left bank of the river, called "Oltrarno" (or beyond the Arno), and very important landmarks are there, including Palazzo Pitti, Boboli Gardens, the House of Galileo Galilei, the Basilica fo Santo Spirito, Piazzale Michelangelo, and others.

Of Roman origin, the city of Florence has always been since the Middle Ages one of the world's major intellectual centres, home to philosophers like Niccolo' Machiavelli, historians like Giorgio Vasari and poets like Dante Alighieri, who with his works gave birth to the Italian language: because of him the Italian language is the Medieval Florentine dialect.

Several of the ancient palaces, or palazzi, that belonged to Florence's noble and richest families have become hotels, modernised yet leaving intact the original features of artistic or historic value, often under the supervision of the Fine Arts authority of the Italian government, so that comfort is not sacrificed but the past splendour is not lost. Frequently these hotels are surprisingly good value.

Hotel Bretagna in Florence Italy
Hotel Bretagna is a first-class 3-star hotel in a spectacular location on the right bank of the River Arno, on Lungarno Corsini, in Florence historic centre.
The hotel is in Palazzo Gianfigliazzi, a major historic Florentine palace which was the most important among the many residences of the noble local family Gianfigliazzi from the 1400s until the end of the of 1700s. In 1828 the Palazzo was acquired by Luigi Bonaparte King of Holland, who also lived there.
The hotel is 5 minutes' walk from both Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) and the Uffizi Gallery, one of the world's most important, most visited and best known art museums.
The building has an impressive facade and splendid interiors, with original Florentine furnishings, frescoed and hand-painted ceilings, wood carvings, bas reliefs, classic decorations, coffered ceilings, rich chandeliers, lovely prints and paintings.
Hotel Bretagna is 10 minutes' walk from the central train station Santa Maria Novella and Florence's main museums, galleries, palazzi, Boboli Gardens, artistic and cultural places of interest.
The hotel is great value. Its staff speak English, are available 24 hours a day and very helpful in every way, including with guided tours, tickets and similar.
Hotel Bretagna's panoramic terrace offers magnificent views of the Arno River, Ponte Vecchio Bridge and the surrounding hills.
Hotel Bretagna takes its name from the fact that it used to be next door to the British Consulate in Florence, which was closed down in 2011, a sad moment in this long historical, mostly cultural, relationship that started as far back as the 1450s, when the English established a diplomatic presence in Florence. Florentine marchioness Bona de' Frescobaldi, friend of Prince Charles, even appealed to the royal family to save Britain's historic consulate in Florence from closure.
The hotel's area is the one preferred by visitors to Florence in their reviews. It is a prosperous neighbourhood, historically home to the city's richest people. Lungarno Corsini, the street on the Arno embankments where the hotel is located, is named after the international bankers Corsini, in the 1600s Florence's wealthiest family, second only to the Grand Duke's.
Just around the corner from the hotel is Via dei Tornabuoni, the Florentine street which is synonymous with high fashion and luxury designer labels (the Bond Street or Fifth Avenue of Florence). Here art, culture, history and shopping come together. The great fashion houses, ateliers and boutiques have now replaced the ancient craftsman and merchant workshops that created the riches and glory of Renaissance Florence. But the old palazzi still dot the whole area, reminding us of how much we owe to our predecessors. Via Tornabuoni is also home to Florence's best restaurants and bars.
And what to say about Ponte Vecchio, a symbol of Florence, one of the most famous and iconic bridges in the world, with the many artisan workshops flanking its sides?
Hotel Bretagna's rooms are elegant and spacious, in light colours.
All rooms and suites have free WiFi, air conditioning, desk, flat-screen TV with satellite channels and cable channels, private bathroom with hairdryer and free toiletries, minibar, safety deposit box, and other amenities.
All suites have views over the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio, and a hydromassage bath.
Private parking is possible at a location nearby.

General price range per room or suite, with or without breakfast included
Single, double, triple & quadruple rooms & suites for 2, 3, 4: 50 - 300 euros
