Selinunte

Its name comes from the celery, which thrives in the ancient city. The leaves of this local coin, which was minted in Sicily in the sixth century BC, can be found on a panther’s head.

This is Selinunte. In ancient times, rich and densely populated, it is now part of the largest European archeological Park, covering 270 hectares. It has two main entrances with its acropoli (necropoli) and three hills.

These temples are the best examples of the Doric Architecture. They are noted for their simplicity and record of proportions.

The bronze Efebo is another emblem of Selinunte cultural heritage, and it’s kept at Castelvetrano Museum. Not only the urban planning, but also the artistic heritage votive-funeral.

You must not miss the beach resorts and the natural preserve of Foce del Belice. Here you may see the turtle Caretta Caretta. Also, look out for the ” fishing enchantment“. Traditional auctions are held in via Scalo di Bruca starting at 7 AM. Fisherman sell what they caught during the night.
