Ischia

Island of Ischia map Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples, in Italy, the others being Capri, Procida, Vivara.

Regular ferries and hydrofoils connect the island of Ischia to the mainland - to the harbours of Naples, Pozzuoli (this has only ferries), the Sorrento & Amalfi peninsula - as well as to Capri and Procida. The trip takes from half an hour to an hour, depending on the departure harbour (Mergellina, in Naples, to Ischia Porto is the quickest route; Molo Beverello is another Naples harbour serving Ischia). There are 6 towns on Ischia island: Ischia town which is the main centre, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio d'Ischia, Serrara Fontana, Barano d'Ischia. The overall resident population is around 50,000 inhabitants. See a map of the island of Ischia on the left.

The climate on Ischia is mild, typically Mediterranean, hot and dry.

Ischia, besides having lovely beaches and beautiful scenery, is particularly important for its spas. Its hot springs, rich in minerals, have been tapped for 2,000 years to fight rheumatism, sexual incapacity, wrinkles, and other conditions. This is due to the presence in Ischia's subsoil of thermomineral waters, rich in iron and sulphur, beneficial to both health and beauty.

The road network of Ischia is extensive, with no traffic restrictions for cars. Public transport is also available. There is a bus service by the SEPSA Company, with frequent bus trips linking the various towns of the island. Or you can take the micro-taxi.

The Castello Aragonese is a very ancient castle, one of Italy's most peculiar castles, built on a small island of volcanic rock near the coast of Ischia Ponte.

Ischia has many beaches. Maronti (pictured) is the most famous beach of the island, a really enchanting beach, partly thanks to the amazing views of the Sant'Angelo promontory.
