Hotels in Rome historical centre recommendations & reviews by guests & independent guides
Accademia Hotel in Rome
This is Travel Guide description: "Location: 300 yds SE of Spanish Steps, on quiet street around corner from Trevi Fountain. Shops, bars and restaurants immediate. Bus stop 15 yds; Barberini underground 150 yds. Exterior: Attractive 6-storey building (19th century). Interior: Presentable and well kept. Small reception with bright and comfortable lounge area. Sizeable breakfast room with tearoom-like ambience. Opinion: Sensible family-friendly B&B, slightly lacking in character but centrally located. Lobby shared with private apartments."
Concierge Guide description: "Accademia, a Trevi treasure. This hotel is housed in a 19th century building, renovated to offer its guests a pleasant stay in the heart of the historic centre, near the most important monuments in Rome. Fontana di Trevi and Piazza di Spagna are within easy reach, in an area rich in luxurious shops, as well as places of artistic and cultural interest. Cost: Moderate. Features: • television • parking • safe deposit • bar • disabled access • air conditioning • pets allowed."
A summary of typical guests' reviews:
"The hotel was accurately described on the web site and, bearing in mind its location and facilities, was excellent value for money. The rooms were not large but had all the usual amenities and were spotless. The breakfast was very good, so much better than the average "continental breakfast". The location, almost beside the Trevi Fountain, is terrific. Front-desk staff were courteous but cold. I can definitely recommend this hotel."
"Our stay was everything that we had hoped it would be and more. Our room had a large king size bed and clean, spacious closet space. It had all of the amenities of a large hotel chain in the United States, including a telephone, cable T.V., a hair dryer, stationary, etc. Also, our bathroom was more than we could have dreamed of! I had read all of the reviews about small Rome bathrooms, but our experience was quite the contrary. Our bathroom was very clean with a full size bathtub and a standing shower. It had excellent water pressure and water temperature. I actually took two bubble baths while we were in Rome! In European standards, the room was spacious, clean, and very pleasant. Our room was VERY quite and we heard no noise from the street during our stay. The staff was VERY helpful in suggesting restaurants, sightseeing, taxis, etc. All in all, our stay at Hotel Accedemia was really great! The location waas perfect and the price was hard to beat for the area. We will stay there again on our next trip to Rome!"

Santa Chiara Hotel in Rome
Concierge guide description: "Santa Chiara
Near the Pantheon.
Situated near the Pantheon, this hotel is one of the best three-stars in the area. It has been run for almost 200 years by the same family and has an esteemed and loyal clientele of academics, professionals and high-level politicians. It is a romantic hotel with a calm atmosphere. The rooms are all pleasant and well furnished (with attractive wooden beams). There are several apartments and suites some of which also contain kitchens. Cost: moderate. Features:
• 24-hour room service
• television
• safe deposit
• bar
• disabled access
• air conditioning
• whirlpool."
Fodor's guide description: "Three historic buildings form this gracious hotel behind the Pantheon. It has been in the same family for 200 years, and the personal attention shows in meticulously decorated and maintained lounges and rooms. Though not all the rooms are spacious, all have character and are quiet and well organized. Each has built-in oak headboards, a marble-top desk, and an elegant travertine bath. Double-glazed front windows overlook Piazza della Minerva. The excellent location and low rates in this category give it a good quality-price ratio. The hotel also has three apartments, for two to five people each, with full kitchens. The topmost has beamed ceilings, a fireplace, and a huge terrace with a view of the Pantheon's dome. 100 rooms, 4 suites. Bar, parking."
Frommer's Rome guide description: "This is a family-run hotel near the Pantheon in the very inner core of historic Rome. Since 1838, it has been welcoming sightseers to classic Rome. The Corteggiani family creates a welcoming atmosphere. Its white walls and marble columns speak of former elegance, although the rooms today are simply furnished, functional, yet comfortable. The size? They range from a broom closet to a suite large enough to be classified as a small Roman apartment. We go for those units facing the Piazza della Minerva, although you'll often have to listen to late-night revelers who don't know when to go home. Half the bedrooms come with complete tub-and-shower bathrooms.
Facilities:
Room service; babysitting; laundry/dry cleaning. In Room Amenities: air conditioning, TV, minibar, hair dryer, safe."
A summary of typical guests' reviews:
"We stayed at the Santa Chiara in Rome and were generally very happy with it. I'd chosen it based on location primarily--I really love the Pantheon and wanted to be close to it and to the area around it in general. It's a wonderful--and busy!--part of Rome to stay in. Some of the other hotels in the Pantheon area were out of our price range--this fit ours, and also I liked what I'd seen on their webpage.
I'd asked that we be given a spacious room, and we were certainly given that! It really was a big room. In fact, I almost felt like it was *too* spacious, given that we'd just come from a small--but very charming--room in Venice that day.
It had a gigantic bathroom as well, with a window. The window was great because it got morning sunlight and fresh air. Also had a nice deep bathtub, and a shower with a curtain instead of one of those half doors."
"In Rome, we stayed at the Santa Chiara Hotel about 1.5 blocks from Pantheon - clean, quiet, comfortable first-rate hotel."
"This is our second vacation in Italy in 2 years. The Santa Chiara was one of the best hotels we stayed at and we would gladly stay there again."
"Santa Chiara was just wonderful - the staff was like having our own personal tour guide and made our stay so enjoyable. Fabulous location - near everythig; big breakfast to keep you going nearly all day."
"This is a very nice hotel in a perfect location just behind the Pantheon. Very convenient to seeing all of the sights in Rome. The breakfast was very good in a spacious room."
"We were very happy with the hotel, and would certainly use it again."
"A perfect place to stay if your serious about comfort and convenience. In the center of everything, easy walks to most attractions, lots of restaurants and cafe's nearby. My double room and bath were spacious and quiet. The included breakfast was bountiful. Service was attentive and courteous. I would stay here the next time I vist Rome."
"Location can't be beat! Just steps from the Pantheon and the wonderful surrounding neighborhood. If noise bothers you, ask for rooms away from the street. First room we were given was *very* spacious, but loud, as it faced the street. We asked to be moved to a quiet room, which was quieter but much smaller. The rooms are not high on charm, but they are quite nice, clean, and the hotel staff was welcoming, friendly and professional. Breakfast was quite good and we appreciated the non-smokers section."
"My experience was far beyond my expectations. The room was ready early (11:00am). And the gave me a Suite at the standard room rate as a Honeymoon gift. Plus the central location put us in walking distance from all the major sights of Rome."
"A Gem! Would stay there again anytime. Excellent location a couple of blocks from the Pantheon, a 5-10 minute walk to Piazza Navona. Ask for a rear-facing room, in the front you can hear a lot of Vespa traffic. My single room was small, but pleasant and comfortable. Shower stall very very small, but bathroom good sized, great towels, plenty of hot water. Hotel provides an outstanding buffet breakfast that will set you up for a good part of the day. Staff provides all services including laundry (for a fee of course.) They made dinner reservations for me, booked reservations at the Borghese Gallery, etc."
"Very quietly and centrally located hotel!!"
"It was apleasure to find that all the details arranged with your service were as expected, particularly because this was not the case with another booking through another service. I would definitely use
Venere
again and recommend it to others."
"Outstanding location. Competent staff. A first rate accomodation. Excellent value. I would always stay here when in Rome and recommend it to anyone."

Sant'Anna Hotel in Rome
Fodor's guide description: "An example of the gentrification of the old Borgo neighborhood in the shadow of St. Peter's Basilica, this fashionable small hotel has ample, air-conditioned bedrooms in art deco style. The frescoes in the breakfast room and fountain in the courtyard are typical Roman touches. The spacious attic rooms have tiny terraces. 20 rooms. Parking."
Assorted guests' reviews:
"Great location. We loved this hotel! It was charming and located on a quiet street within walking distance to lots of tourist attaractions and to the Metro. You could also walk across the river to a less touristy part of town where there were more interesting restaurants."
"Spacious and clean rooms, cosy atmosphere, great location (5 minutes walk to St Peter's Basilica), helpful staff. I would stay here again and highly recommend this hotel."
"Nice 3-star hotel. Good location near the Vatican, on a quiet side street. Nice continental breakfast buffet. Good value for the price in Rome."
"We remember the hotel very fondly. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms and and general areas are satisfactory. The location is ideal to visit the Vatican and somewhat central to other attractions (near bus and Metro). The quieter street, restaurants, and shops on Borgo Pio made the stay comfortable and convenient. Our consensus was that we would definitely stay at Sant'Anna Hotel during another Rome visit."
"Outstanding charming place in good location. If there is any problem, the only thing I can name is that the lift(elevator) is barely enough for two persons and baggages. But this is minimal. I recommend it to everyone."
"Sant'Anna Hotel is a nice hotel in the historical center."
"We loved Hotel Sant'Anna. It is a small but elegant spot and so close to the Vatican. The rooms are both charming and well equipped and we enjoyed our triple, which had a built-in twin for our 10-year-old son."
"Great convenient location for visiting Vatican museums and St. Peter's. Quiet street with no vehicles allowed. A great choice, we felt."
"My family found the Hotel Sant'Anna very comfortable and convenient. I found the
Venere
website easy to use and to have exactly the information which I needed to choose the right hotel. Best resource I found for travel in Italy."

Trinità dei Monti Hotel in Rome
Frommer's Rome guide description: "Between two of the most bustling piazzas in Rome (Barberini and Spagna), this is a friendly and well-maintained place. The hotel occupies the second and third floors of an antique building. Its guest rooms come with herringbone-pattern parquet floors and big windows, and are comfortable, if not flashy. Each has a good mattress and a tidy tiled, shower-only bathroom. The hotel's social center is a simple coffee bar near the reception desk. Don't expect anything terribly fancy, but the welcome is warm and the location is ultraconvenient. Facilities:
Bar; laundry. In Room Amenities: air conditioning, TV, minibar, hair dryer, safe."
A summary of typical guests' reviews:
"Good value, clean rooms. Good breakfast and very helpful staff. Centrally located and a great base to walk to all the major attractions. Highly recomended good value option."
"Central, comfortable, clean, good relationship between quality and price."

Hotel Forte in Rome
Assorted guests' reviews:
"The location is very good. Service of the front is also very good."
"Friendy staff, excellent location, fabulous price. the street is quiet, however the thin walls let all internal and external noise in. but we'll be back to this excellent value hotel again."
"Recently refurbished hotel, two steps (literally!) away from Piazza di Spagna, in the very heart of Rome. The location is excellent, since via Margutta has almost no traffic at all, therefore very low noise level. Very good breakfast also, at least for the price paid. Hard to beat service/price ratio: next time in Rome I'll surely consider this hotel!"
"Very nice hotel in a lovely location. Friendly staff who were happy to help with requests. Would go back if in Rome again."
"The hotel is wonderfully located-right next to the Spanish Steps yet in a quiet side street. It is very convenient for everything -shops, restaurants sights and public transport. Enjoyed my stay very much."
"Good place. Good breakfast. I had a very comfortable stay and would like to come back again when I return to Rome." "It's the kind of hotel where everything is just perfect, without the exhorbitant price. Only 2 shortcomings, no porter for a hotel located on the 2nd level and the room(I stayed in-a couple)could be slightly bigger. The location was just perfect to any attractions of central Rome. Thank you, Hotel Forte."
"This is a real jewel of a hotel on a very quiet street and yet only a block to the subway, Spanish Steps, and the very best high fashion shopping in Rome. Breakfast is very good, but not elaborate, staff are extremely nice and helpful, and the hotel is beautifully decorated and maintained."
"The hotel is a terrific value, located in a great area. We would definitely recommend the Forte! As for the Venere web site, it was easy to use."
"The Hotel Forte is on a charming little street (Via Margutta) that is just steps away from the best shopping area in the world (the Spanish Steps area of Rome, Italy). The hotel shines from its recent renovation. The rooms and bathrooms are new and clean. The staff at the front desk and breakfast area are friendly and helpful. We had two rooms for six people, and everyone enjoyed their stay. We will definately stay at the Hotel Forte the next time we are in Rome."
"wish to be there again."
"Hotel Forte is in the best position imaginable - steps away from Prada,(oh and the Spanish Steps!!) what more can I say!! This was my third visit to Rome, and the Hotel Forte is the best hotel I have stayed in, again in a unique position right in the centre of the action and yet so quiet at night. The staff were friendly and the breakfast lovely. We will definitely be going back next year and I've already recommended it to our friends. Thanks!"
