Castello di Pergolato. General details and a little history

Castello di Pergolato

The Castello di Pergolato is a splendid, original example of a Tuscan Medieval castle, set on a hill with far-reaching views in stunning countryside in the Chianti district, world renowned for its prestigious wine production and the beauty of its scenery immortalized in Renaissance masters' paintings. Overlooking the valley of the river Pesa, Pergolato Castle is 14 km (9 miles) from Florence and 45 km (30 miles) from Siena.

It was built on the foundations of a Roman settlement in the 10th century as a feudal castle by the Buondelmonti family, who ruled the surrounding area as the Imperial Visidomani. The Buondelmontis, who after the rise to power of the city of Florence became the new owners of this whole territory, had a number of castles all linked among them, to protect the Pesa Valley. They fortified all the important high points along the river Pesa and along the Roman road via Cassia.

So they built the Castello di Pergolato, whose name has a Latin origin: "Pergum Latum", meaning "large promontory". The Castle, which was internally converted to become villa between 1450 and 1500, was inhabited by the Buondelmonti family until the death of their last member, Luisina Buondelmonti, in 1845.

Pergolato castle, now over 1,000 years old, has been restored by its present owners to a very high standard. It has been furnished with the rarest, most precious antiques, it has a lift and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool with a view inside its fortified walls (pictured left). The pool is in the castle's garden, overlooked by Roman statues in the loggia next to it.

The castle can now be rented as a vacation villa in gorgeous Tuscany countryside. Many celebrities like the rock group U2 and the supermodel Naomi Campbell have stayed here; business magnates and wealthy tycoons have holidayed at Castello di Pergolato. But the castle is affordable by many ordinary people, especially since it can be rented by large groups.

Bargino, the nearest village, with shops, is 1 mile away. The town of San Casciano Val di Pesa, with bank, post office, shops, is 4 miles away. Florence is 14 km (9 miles), Siena 45 km (30 miles), Pisa 1 hour's distance.

The castle can accommodate up to 15-23 people.

Chianti district information & how to get to Pergolato

Chianti landscape

Castello di Pergolato area map Castello di Pergolato is in the wine-producing region of Chianti, a vast, predominantly hilly area between Florence and Siena cultivated with vineyards and olive groves, with cypress trees marking the boundaries between plots of land. It is the oldest officially defined wine-producing area in the world, dating from a 1716 decree.

Chianti is in the region of Tuscany, in north-west Italy. Halfway between Rome and Milan, it is in a central location to many parts of Italy.

The nearest village to Pergolato Castle is Bargino, which is a few minutes' drive away and can also be reached by a brisk walk from the castle.
Chianti vineyards

Florence is also very close, 9 miles from the castle.

To get to Pergolato, take the A1 motorway (Autostrada del Sole) in direction of Florence (Firenze in Italian). At the Firenze Certosa exit, take the superstrada to Siena until Bargino exit. Take the exit and drive past the village of Bargino until the second right turning where you will find signs to Castello di Pergolato.

The Chianti district has for many years attracted not only visitors but also people of different nationalities, mostly from northern Europe, who, fascinated by the mesmerizing beauty of the area, have taken residence on its sunny hills. So an international community has developed over the years here alongside the local community. German, British and other English-speaking tourists have turned into permanent citizens, and they all have one thing in common: a love of art and beauty (and possibly excellent wine and delicious food). Not surprisingly, since this is after all the landscape that has inspired the great artists of the Renaissance and at the same time has been modelled by the artistry of its farmers and growers.
